James Reveal Eriogonum Project Grant

The Eriogonum Society is pleased to announce a grant opportunity designed to aid in scientific research, educational outreach, or other worthy projects that relate to the large genus Eriogonum ( Polygonaceae). This award honors the preeminent authority on Eriogonum and prolific botanist, the late Dr. James Reveal. Projects that aim to promote conservation efforts and/or inform our knowledge of the basic biology and natural history through field or horticulture research will be given preferential consideration. Award size will depend upon merit and need. The maximum amount granted will be $2,000. Funds are not intended to cover salary or stipends for applicants or others involved. 

Guidelines & Requirements (not to exceed four typed pages):

  • Project title, names, and contact information for all involved
  • Project description providing details of the project, background information, basic methods employed to accomplish objective(s), and a discussion of the importance of the proposed project (research, education, outreach).
  • Detailed budget of how the grant would be utilized for the project
  • Personal statement including necessary experience and qualifications, as well as personal background and reason for interest in Eriogonum

Grant recipients are required to write an article for the Eriogonum Society newsletter or give a presentation at an Eriogonum Society annual meeting.

Hugh MacMillan Scholarship Fund

Our Annual Trip Fee Waiver Program

The Hugh MacMillan Fund honors its namesake, one of the founding members of the Eriogonum Society, who also served as both President and Vice President. He was also instrumental in the development and maintenance of the Eriogonum Society website for many years and served as valuable council on many annual society trips.

Scholarship Summary

Recipients of the Hugh MacMillan Scholarship fund will receive a waiver for registration fees and a stipend for travels costs (amount varies by availability) for the next Eriogonum Society Meeting.

Guidelines and Requirements for Applicants

  • Students receive prioritization for this financial aid.
  • There are maximum 2 recipients per Eriogonum Society Meeting, barring extenuating circumstances by discretion of the board.
  • Recipients will be required to compose an article for the Eriogonum Society Newsletter detailing a specific Eriogonum or their overall experience for the trip they attend, with a 600 minimum word count and 2 photos.
  • Applicants need to provide a brief statement to contextualize their reason for financial need, submitted via an email to  eriogonumsociety@gmail.com
  • Applications open upon announcement of a given annual trip’s location.
  • Applications close four weeks prior to a given annual meeting.
